Your video helped me fix my grandsons fire tablet. Prying up the glued down board and one other stuck thing. Good to know what moves and what doesn’t. Solder connections on charging port only dicey part, ridiculously small. No confidence there but it works for now. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for posting this video. I had the exact same problem and hadn't even attempted to install the new port until I saw your video. Fixed my fire tablet!

Glad to see that this worked for you! I had the same issue with a clients tablet who tried to repair it them self but ended up ripping pad. What I did was solder a USB cable directly to to the board as the pads were to badly damaged.

I know this is a year+ late but here it goes...
pin 1 is 5v, pin 5 is ground, pin 4 is ID and not used outside of otg cables. Pins 2 and 3 are data. You'll not be able to sync data from that kindle any more (if you ever could), but power up should be good to go.

Shielding is ground.

If you're going to be doing smd work.. get some smaller diameter solder.. something like a .2mm diameter. I also would prefer to use something like a J2 (chisel) tip vs. your point tip. Cleanup, use some isoprophyl alcohol on a q-tip. And as someone said below.. hold tip to part and preheat.. should be in contact with both pad and pin. Then apply solder to the piece.. not to the soldering iron directly and let the flux in the core of the solder draw it into place.. Cleaning your tip between swipes at the solder bridges will do you all sorts of favors too.

Hey man, I have Fire HD 8 kids... need to repair the port, facing similar issue like you did. Does Fire use any more pins except the charging 2 ones? Your seemed to do well.

So only the 2 outer terminals are used.
So must be safe to solder over the 4 terminals. 2 either side?
In fact would it make connection better?

Kudos for trying first of all. When removing solder sometimes you have to add more to allow the sucker to work better. I also suggest you buy some multi core solder with the flux already in it, plus a chisel pointed bit is better for the larger legs on the socket. Other than that, practice practice practice. Soldering is a dying art in these days of surface mount and automated assembly.

Centre 3 pins are for data transfer, so you wouldn't be able to transfer files from/ to this device.
My daughter's tablet just broke in the same way, conveniently the Vcc and Ground pads are still attached just like in your video, so I'm going to give this a try!

hi, i ended up refreshing the 4 solder joints. I then accidentally dropped some solder across the 5 pins, which I then cleaned up with solder braid. actually seems to be charging.Just wondered, if a y of the 5 pins have solder across them what would that do - any safety issues?

Well done glad it worked out. For others only apply small amount of flux to the actual leg joints and through hole socket (Mistake in video was smearing flux all over connector). Also apply heat to area with iron so it reaches high tempreture then apply solder so it flows into joint (placing solder direct on joint then heating will result in dry solder joints).

The metal case that has prongs that insert in the board must be heated by the iron to get the solder to flow better. Heating just the solder won't do it. You must hold the iron against the metal of the connector right by the prong you are soldering and get it hot enough to flow the solder. Then the solder will flow to make a smooth and a stronger solder joint. I believe that the center 3 contacts provide the USB interface function, so that won't work unless you can find where they go on the board and connect them with very small gauge wire. The outer 2 are power and ground.

These Amazon kindle tablets doesn’t matter whatever versions it is.These charging batteries ports are horriblely in designed and soldering it onto the circuit board putting it together.Very common problems and defects on these Amazon Kindle tablets devices.
