Business Matters | How has the Russian economy fared since the war with Ukraine? | The Hindu

If we thought the world turned upside down with the Covid-19 pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has rocked the world’s economic boat.

In July, the IMF cut the global GDP forecast as economic outlook grows ‘gloomy and more uncertain’. The Fund expects the world economy to grow 3.2% in 2022 before slowing to 2.9% in 2023. This is revised downwards by 0.4 and 0.7 percentage points, respectively, from its April forecasts.

But ever since tanks from Russia rolled into its neighbouring country, how exactly has the world changed? How has Russia’s economy performed? Are there any temporary benefits that countries have sought? Which countries are turning into bigger trade partners than before?

Let’s be real here. The strength of the ruble isn’t its real value. It isn’t publicly traded like normal currencies are, and the government is using its reserves to shore up the value, as well as companies that trade internationally are required to use 80% of their profits in international currencies to buy rubles for creating artificial demand for it. Russian people are also severely limited in buying foreign currencies with rubles.

Concise, and eye opening Bharat. I watched a few clips of our Honourable Minister of External Affairs on energy independence, and there is a lot of data from this episode that resonates well with that.

quite an eye opener, it was only energy trade that has been in limelight.

Sir, russian oil is from the Urals majorly, so this is sour oil. Therefore, they would cost more for the importing countries to refine it and though refined the oil still would have H2S remnants. How would this be more economical to the importing countries like india, etc...?

India is right to pursue its own interests rather than aligning unquestionably with any geopolitical superpower vested or explicit interests. If it can benefit from all sides, then go for it forthwith!

The law of KARMA is inevitable. Sanctions boomerang with sanctions. Escalation brings escalation. God bless 2022.
