Wow. Thank you all! I am trying to read every comment. But I think what I'm hearing the most is that... it's different. Way different. So don't try to paint like I do traditionally. Learn the tools and paint digitally.

Right?

Digital art is completely different. You just need to practice, use layers, delete, redo, undo, but PRACTICE is the key!

I switched to digital art from traditional art 3 years back, I can confirm it’s a whole different ballgame altogether. It took a while to getting used to the wide array of tools and presets and effects but my best advice would be to try a little bit of everything to figure out the brushes/textures you like the best. Once you get a hang of it, I can assure you, digital art is just as fun and interesting! :) 💗

As an artist who dabbles in both traditional and digital, I can say that they are sometimes VASTLY different. Where I find ease in sketching a figure on paper, I can never replicate that digitally.
At some point, you recognize that there are some things that pull across, like style and colour prefferences, but at the end of the day; digital art is different. It's almost like comparing charcoals to acrylics!

I can confirm, digital is a whole different skill than standard paint and paper xd

oh my sweet sweet scott. your first mistake was thinking whoever make these brushes have ever picked up a tube of gouache

The brush names are just what they kinda look like. It's similar to traditional art in the way that we first draw the rough sketch first then line art on top of it on another layer and then the colors, details, highlights, shadows etc on different layers.

oh, digital art is certainly its own medium !! i focus mainly on digital painting, though i am a hobbyist as of right now.
instead of building up colour, i start by blocking in colour, adding shadows, and then i render it, bit by bit [paint in the details of the light and shadows]
though i also know a lot of artists paint fully in black and white and then add colour using blending modes, but i imagine that’s already unfamiliar territory haha

If you want to get the color buildup/layering effect, try lowering the opacity. You can also get brushes online from other people who create their own brushes that may better mimic what you’re looking for. It’s a different skill set, but one worth learning.

The brushes names are usually more so what they look like than feel like. If you want a water color esc. experience I would suggest doing a sketch layer, then a layer on top using a brush you enjoy, then using a blending brush to stretch out the color. It won't ever feel exactly like water color, or guache, because it isn't. It's a different medium, but there are a ton of ways to paint digititally play around and find what works for you! On clip studio specifically there are a ton of brushes made by other artists you can access. Some are free, some are a few dollars downloading a bunch and trying them out might help too.

Thank you for trying digital art! Not all people actually acknowledge suggestions so thank you for doing that :D

My best digital painting advice as a fellow watercolor artist is lowering the opacity of your brushes. Its basically digitally adding water by making it lighter and more translucent.

"are you learning a completely new skillset specifically for digital painting? "

Yes.

Would definitely recommend using layers, changing the opacity and finding the brushes for you. There are a few on the catalogue. My favourite little trick is using clip layers for shading so it doesn't blur out the layer under so it stays crisp while keeping it in line. <3

I struggled with the transition to digital as well. I found that it's all about finding the right brush and settings for you. Once I need that everything sort of clicked, my workflow improved and I began seeing the kind of results I wanted from my art. Experiment as much as you can!!

As a both traditional and digital artist... I have no idea!

Use layers! The gouache brush mixes your lineart so it turns out really muddy. In digital art, your lineart never dries. I like getting brushes from the assets store if there's a specific texture I want. And tbh for me, digital painting feels a lot like acrylic painting haha
