Inspired by Matt's videos, I did hidden doors for our hall linen closet and laundry machine closet for a remodel. They open out and have baseboard trim run across the bottom. So I used pivot hinges by Rixson. It took some sketching and fitting, but I was able to have conistent 1/8" gaps all around.

“Always use plywood when building a hidden door, because MDF will sag over time.” Then a few scenes later… “this door is made using MDF” lol.

Every house should have a hidden door! :)

I used to install carpet and my favorite door was hidden in the master closet, behind the hanging clothes, had to bend over a bit to get under the bar but the back wall opened up with a good push into a room

Much gratitude to you Matt for suggesting those Japanese hinges, they work great on hiding my "man door" in my old garage door for a mixing suite and production studio build out in my old two car garage - made the HOA happy they can't tell from the street ... Keep up the great work Cheers

Did some work in a house here in Austin a while back that had a super cool hidden basement. This basement was probably about 6 to 700 SQ ft so decent size. So one door was a book shelve with a hidden latch in the hallway that opened up to a stair case. The other door to it was in the garage. The corner trim flipped open to reveal the latch then the entire corner opened up. There was also a separate room in the basement with a huge commercial steel door and the walls were all reinforced with sheet metal hidden under the drywall. Kinda made me a little nervous wondering what he used that room for lol

What a great walk down memory lane. I'd love to see more themed compilation videos like this.

That was cool. Glad I don't have a place in my house to use one because I imagine it's a very tricky build. I just did a barn door install by framing out a 30"X78" French door to 38"X84" with ripped down 2X6s, dowels and wood glue. The hardware kit was from Amazon and the instructions were pretty vague, so there's a lot of measurements that can go wrong, but I got it done for our new 4 season sunroom upgrade. Great video Matt!!

Your hidden doors inspired me to install two while we are remodeling. The company who made the doors used SOSS hinges. I'm having a very hard time getting an expert (master carpenter) to install them correctly! And living in south Louisiana hurricane Ida hit and all the trades are beyond busy as well as fixing their own homes that sustained damage. Any suggestions would be great!
Also, I would like to find out where to order the Electromagnetic locks from???

Always a fan of the hidden doors!! It’s funny in one video you said don’t use MDF because of sag, then the last one was all MDF. 🤣

Center pivot systems tend to work the best. I’ve done quite a few over the years and like the ability to have infinite adjustment and load carrying that conventional hinges don’t offer. I fabricated the upper and lower pivots myself and they work flawlessly with well over 2000 lbs of weight in the box. I use only electromagnetic locks on these units. Easy to set up and impossible to open when engaged. The key is to counter stress the back of the cabinet with cables and turnbuckles to counter the torsion of an open face box, which will always be an issue with a wood box.

Some absolutely brilliant ideas here that can be incorporated into the man cave! Thanks for the insight.

Hey mat, all those hidden doors looks great,
can you recommend the
hinges and the
push latches
needed for closet doors. I have 4 closets which I would love to make invisible. Please let me know. Thank you
