How to clean the washing machine filter

just did this for the first time in my life, had this washing machine for 2 years, only thing in there was a little gunk and an empty ballpoint pen filling. barely any smell either. really surprised honestly seeing as i work in a kitchen, i thought i was abusing it pretty badly with all the grease.
