Following the Second World War, many trials took place to bring the perpetrators of atrocities and war crimes to justice. The Nuremberg Trials were the most high profile that brought the remaining members of Hitler's Nazi government in front of a judge. During the trials, much of the horror of the concentration camps was shown to the courtroom, but one incredibly shocking moment was when the former commandant of Auschwitz Rudolf Höss testified for the defence. He brazenly spoke about the amount of people killed inside of Auschwitz, and he quoted that under his leadership millions had been murdered.
Following Höss' statements, he was arrested and then was sentenced to death following a trial that took place in Poland. However after the trial, the judges were petitioned to, as people wanted him to be executed within the same walls of Auschwitz where he inflicted so much suffering. This was granted, and on the day of his execution he was brought back to Auschwitz where a specially created gallows had been made by Prisoners of War. Gallows had existed inside of Auschwitz and many executions were carried out with hundreds of prisoners being executed to strike fear into the hearts of other prisoners. Many of these executions took place on a mass scale, with up to 16 being killed on the gallows. However Höss' gallows were specially made, and he was the only person executed on them.
Rudolf Höss was brought to the gallows, and then handed over to the executioner who swiftly carried out the proceedings. Today these specific gallows that took the former commandant's are still inside of the camp, and can be seen. Unlike the other execution structures though, only one life was taken on them.
