Dave is on a mission to learn what makes a good board game. Inspired by Mike Selinker’s 2015 PAX East lecture, Dave is playing through as many games from Mike’s list of ‘The 100 Games You Must Absolutely, Positively, Must Know How to Play’. His goal is to finish game number 100 on Mike’s list, a game you design yourself. Join him as he learns about game design and share with Dave as he explores their love of board games.

Fantastic discussion and analysis Dave. Really enjoyed this episode. I now have a way of identifying these experiences. Utterly brilliant research and examples. Thank you so very much.

Dave, best video I've seen on these topics.  I do enjoy a bit the more specific definition/concept for metagame, in that you are playing against the dominant strategy, so to speak.  I guess in part because I understood metagame thru Pokémon.  But yes any other info you can bring to your advantage, prep/experience/knowledge of other player, etc, is interesting. Ortho is misspelled in your title, fyi.

Paragame about player motivation/desire... yeah for myself I would say the consideration when one just wants to have fun, being strategic but not fully vetting and thinking each decision.  Probably because of that I enjoy slightly more relaxed, enjoyable, with some tactics and/or strategy of course, but also allows for some randomness, because a pleasurable experience is primary, with some competition, but not as the fundamental concern.   Overall, I'm not sure if I'm enthused either about the ortho or para terms, although the ideas behind them are intriguing.
