If not, you should do something else. Just practice the shit out of the pentatonic scale until you can sing it.

Now learn some pentatonic solos, I recommend Comfortably Numb as a starter (dont feel intimdated)

Dont just learn it, try to see in what position of the pentatonic you're in and what licks the solo uses. After doing this with a couple solos you'll be able to play what's in your head.

Once you feel quite comfortable (not perfect) with your pentatonics, learn the hotel california solo. It uses the pentatonic scale but also adds in notes of the minor scale.
Once you really know this solo you can learn more solos like this + just pentatonic solos.
It should get you to playing melodic pentatonic solos and add in some flavour with the minor/major + blues scale.

I like to do this with every scale I practice. String skipping is so forgetten by intermediate guitarists, it's like sometimes we just forget we can do that.
