This song makes me think of my childhood friend who recently passed in November. I’m only a freshman in high school but I’ve known her since first grade, and I was the first person there when she died. She was hit by a car… leaving my house. She left her hoodie and wouldn’t pick up the phone so I biked to her house only to find blood strewn across the street and her laying facedown 20 feet from the crosswalk. I will never forget the feeling of not feeling. The shock, the numbness, the disbelief. Having to call her mom after calling 911 is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Watching them pick her blood covered face over the concrete… seeing what her brain looked like, sitting with her as she bled out in her last moments. On top of all this, my sister was born on the same day as her funeral, and I had to pick. I went to her funeral and went to the hospital, but the looming sadness my mom had of not having me there when my little sister was born after raising me as a single mom for 12 years, getting married, and having another child. The hardest two weeks I’ve ever experienced. Shout out to all those who use music to heal, I understand.

Right about this point in the song I started to open up and feel all the hurt again. I know she just used me, that she probably thought she loved me but when times got tough, she chose to push me away. To make me the source of her problems when all I did was sit patiently for her to get better. It may not have been real to her, but every second of it was for me. I just can’t imagine what it’ll feel like when someone who truly loves me comes along. Best of luck to every other guy who was there for a girl before they could be there for themselves. Do what makes you happy, and even though it hurts, never stop trying to keep your heart open.
