A universal poem to home towns around the world....mine was a small town in Denmark, where on summer days I would be on my swing in our garden with a cassette deck and headphones, listening to great 50-60-70s music. The world felt friendly then, my heart was unafraid, and there was love. I look back across the decades and sometimes put on the same old mix tapes and recall how good the beginning was. The house is still standing, and so are my memories.

Listening to this song reminds me of when I went to see Springsteen in like 1985. The crowd at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas was completely silent during this song and lighters were everywhere. It brings tears to my eyes and makes me remember the days when people were a lot nicer and times were better. I really miss those times.

When I drive through my hometown these days, I'm struck by all the " used to be's". My best friend "used to live here". This is where I "used to go to school". Now it feels like a town of ghosts. A town of "used to be".

I'm not particularly a Springsteen fan, but this song is a small masterpiece. It brings me to tears just listening to it.

I'm from Cambridge, Massachusetts which is where Harvard University and M.I.T are located. It's a major industrial and innovative city with a very liberal background. However, it's my hometown and whenever I go through there I always think of this song. No matter where you end up your hometown doesn't leave you.

The most poignant and telling part of this song is the silence after the last ‘this is your hometown’. A devastating comment on what has happened to so many communities the world over. That silence speaks volumes and is when the sadness and tears come ☯️🙏

One thing stands out as a beacon, is when your kids ask for your wisdom, and you show it to them, and they see demonstrated the value of what you've done and brought to the table. Even though they have surpassed your prosperity, and have had to learn on their own, they see where they've come from and seem to cherish their heritage, and carry a chunk of it, into their own and their children. Something valuable is passed on, as the next generation does realize that "they" as well as "I" stand and stood on the shoulders of those mentors and giants, so I could see into the future. Those "giants" who stood, supporting me, in my own disbelief and had the patience to stand and support "me" long enough for me to pass on their wisdom, as I have done for my kids. And hopefully, someday "they" will become the "giants" who will stand long enough for their kids to see far enough into the future.

What a beautiful and poignant melody. It’s almost unfair how good he is, but he’s touched by God with genius.❤

My hometown was a beautiful town from the day it was founded until the 1980’s. Then the bad elements took over my town and everything went downhill. I still visit every now and then but it’s not the same. I miss you cd Juarez. I miss you so bad but you’re not mine anymore.

This song was used for a video that celebrated my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary...pictures of them back in the day, on the farm, at parties, in the 40s and 50s and 60s. Beautiful

This song captures (for me at least), some of the true greatness, of parenting and of learning and presenting the raw reality of how things progress, and how we have to survive, and try to pass on those skills to our kids. If "they" understand the same "reality" we know, they, hopefully will be able to change directions and avoid what we couldn't or didn't know how to. Of "Giants" and Older "Giants".

If Bruce Sprinsteen had never written another song, this would be remembered as one of the greatest contemporary American songs ever composed.
