Jellyfish aren't the most nutritious animals in the ocean. Yet sea turtles and many other organisms get their nutrition from almost nothing else. Here's why they don't totally starve to death.

Eating Jellyfish is pretty common is some countries. In Japan it's sold pre-sliced and mixed with sesame oil, soy sauce, vinegar, and a bit of chili pepper. Mix it with some thinly-sliced cucumber, and you have quick, easy (and tasty) salad!

Edible jellyfish are quite tasty. You can serve them with a mix of soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil and MSG and add some peppers if you would like to.

Jellyfish is quite common in Asian cuisine. You can find it at just about every Asian food mart here in the US, and at most Asian restaurants. It has a taste and texture similar to seaweed (not the dried kind) and is prepared in much the same way as part of a seafood salad. I've had it a few times, and remember it being quite good.

I actually have had jellyfish... it's a pretty normal thing at dim sum restaurants. They have not much flavor of their own and just taste of whatever sauce they're in, and they have an interesting dense texture. Wasn't half bad.

Chilled marinated jellyfish "salad" is a very common appetizer at Cantonese/Hong Kong Chinese seafood restaurants, particularly at special meals and banquets. A bit crunchy without much flavor of its own, but it's on the milder end of intimidating dishes when it comes to Cantonese cuisine...

I am an organism that subsists on Cheetos and ice cream. I'm hoping that the food chain will stop with me.

You can order sliced jellyfish at most Chinese restaurants as an appetizer if you are in China even in landlocked areas no where near the ocean. Contrary to popular belief jellyfish are actually pretty chewy for a creature that’s more than 90% water due to the mesoglea that functions as a hydrostatic skeleton in their tissues.

95% water seems like it'd be a lot but remember that WE are over 60% water and most fruits are over 90% water and many are at least 95% as well. So really, foods that are 95% water aren't really all that weird or unusual. Of course, the fact that jellies are an animal IS weird but the specific percentage isn't too strange.

Sea celery? Should go nice with sea cucumbers. 😁

Hi Hank!

I'm surprised the ecological perspective on jellyfish hasn't actually changed all that much. We now know they aren't _useless, _ sure, but they still aren't critical to most ecosystems.

Their crunchiness makes them a great base for salads

Jellyfish is pretty common as food in Vietnamese culture. It's something I've had numerous times in my life.
