I once read that earth's land life came about because of the tides caused by the moon. The tides caused "dry" land to occur twice a day along the shore, and some organisms survived being left out of water. These organisms are the ones that developed into animal life (plants would have colonized the land before this). But Mars, without tidal moons, could not raise land life due to lack of tides.
