Installing your 2019 VW Tiguan rear spoiler has never been easier. The spoiler didn't originally come on this Tiguan but our customer purchased an OEM spoiler and had a body shop install it. The spoiler comes with the 3M adhesive upon purchase but there may not have been enough coverage or the Texas heat just got the best of this car. It fell off the Tiguan and our customer searched us out to repaint the spoiler and install it for him. The install portion is the easiest part but the tedious work is in the preparations. Let's dive in!
TOOLS NEEDED:
You will need cleaning supplies and 3M double-sided tape. The cleaning solutions may vary but we recommend at the very least, some car wash soap, and at best rubbing alcohol.
PROCESS:
This is a pretty easy and straightforward install. Brand new spoilers will generally be clean and have an adhesive tape ready to install. So, there is not much cleaning to be done with new spoilers. Also, most SUV spoilers will require tape and may not need to be bolted. A lot of older SUVs require the spoilers to be bolted but working with tape is also very easy.
What we have here, is a used OEM spoiler that fell off the customer's car. Ideally, you want to use rubbing alcohol to clean off the area but we did not have any at the time. But there are other ways so we'll show you how. We have to first remove the old adhesive tape. Luckily, this is pretty easy to do. We were just rolling the old tape and removing it. There is some residue that is leftover but using Goo-Gone will definitely remove the rest. Be sure to apply the Goo-Gone and let sit for about a minute, then clean it off. We are not sure what is in Goo-Gone to make it work so well but we don't trust chemicals. We want this tape to stick on this spoiler forever. We used a surface cleaner or a wax and grease remover to clean the spoiler. This works the same as rubbing alcohol, but if you don't have either, soap and water will do just fine. Now you can apply the 3M double-sided tape. There may be other brands of tap you could use but 3M is the best. Just use 3M tape and it will stay on your car an extremely long time. As you can see in the video, applied a lot of 3M tape to make sure it never falls off. It's important to know where to apply the tape, so make sure you test fit it. Before installing the spoiler, you also have to clean the area where the spoiler will be situated. Use the same steps as the spoiler and make sure the area is free of dirt and debris. The tape will still work on top of the dirt but it will affect the tape. Instead of the tape sticking to a clean surface, it will be on a surface of dirt that may weaken the 3M tape over time. Once the area is clean, install the spoiler in the desired placement, make sure you are even on both sides. Once your install this, you do not want to remove it, otherwise you will have to reapply new 3M tape. You can lift the trunk or rear hatch to let the spoiler sit or let gravity pull it down. Our customer had to drive back home so we applied tape going vertically pulling the back of the spoiler up and towards the front of the car. It's best to leave the tape on for several hours just to make sure the spoiler doesn't drop or sag while the 3M tape sets. You have now installed your rear spoiler, congratulations!
