PERMUTATION | Jerryco Jaurigue
Currently, there are 8 participating universities in the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP). Recently, volleyball is one of the events that gain popularity because of superstars like Alysa Valdez and Rachelle Anne Daquis. After 2 round robins, 4 teams will be declared as part of the Final Four of the Season, they will be battling for the most coveted championship trophy. Imagine you are a sports analyst and wanted to predict the final four teams before the season starts, how many possible arrangements are there?
Permutation Rule
The arrangement or permutation of n distinct objects taken r at a time (1≤r≤n) without repetition is an arrangement of r of the n objects in a specific order and denoted by P(n,r) or P n¦r or nPr. Since P(n,r) is more convenient to write, we will use it most of the time.
P(n,r)=n!/(n-r)!
Remarks:
If r=n, the number of permutations that may be done is n!.
The order in which the objects come into the group is important.
