George is also the patron Saint of Georgia which has a similar flag. He was a Greek soldier in the Roman army.

The flags used to represent England, in whole or in part and across history, are sources of great interest to me. For example one of the earliest flags we know of that was used by ancestors of the modern day English was the white horse banner of Hengist, first king of Kent, first of the Saxon kingdoms, first of the Germanic people in Britain.

Saint George's is also used here in Catalonia in some local flags (like Barcelona's) since we have a big tradition around him and it's also our patron saint.

It's like our valentines day and its costumary for partners to gift each other books and roses for the legend on Sant Jordi and the rose that emerged from the dragon's blood.

Fun fact: in our local legend all the action happens in central Catalonia instead of the near east (although its told booth ways)

If I remember correctly, the George Cross was originally used to identify ships sailing from London ports. The current flag of London is a George Cross with a little red sword in the corner.

I always thought it was from the white tunics with a red cross on it that that knights of templer wore as they were guarding their patrons as they travelled on pilgrimage to the holy lands during the conquests and that's why it was a symbol of England
