Why Japanese Destroyers are Disguised Aircraft Carriers

The use of disguised aircraft carriers was a risky gamble by the Japanese, but it paid off in the early stages of the war. The Japanese destroyers were able to launch surprise air strikes against Allied ships, and they often went undetected. However, the Allies eventually caught on to the Japanese deception, and the disguised aircraft carriers became less effective.

Modern Japan is our tightest ally in the Pacific today.
Much like the UK is in the Atlantic and European waters.
I for one am proud to have served, even decades ago, on a U.S. Navy Ship alongside our Japanese ally.

Japan: "Whaaaa? That isn't an ICBM, it's a satellite launch vehicle with self-destruct capability, you know, for safety."

The 'disguised as aircraft carriers' makes it sound like it's a destroyer inside of an aircraft carrier like when in battle it'll pop out secret missile and torpedo batteries out of nowhere.

We should let Japan rearm. They need it for self defense especially with how crazy the region is becoming

Japan is now an ally as well as Germany. Kudos to these two powerhouse countries for quality technology.

This is always welcome news. Having an ally in the pacific with abilities to project power is a win for us.

We're going on near a hundred years since WWII ended. Japan should and must have the means to protect it's own territory.

Kind of like how Germany called their main battle rifle the K98 or karbiner, they could only have certain numbers of weapons of each type, by calling it a carbine they got to produce more than if they called it a rifle, which is clearly is.

However its probably time to start easing restrictions on the Japanese military, the likelihood of them becoming a hostile rogue state and posing a threat to the stability of the region is quite low.

They are displacing the same weight as a heavy cruiser

The region does need Japan to balance China, the US shouldn’t have to be the main opposing force, because it's Japan's backyard. Japan is no longer the bully nation they were in WW2, they have good leaders now and democracy!

Like going to court and saying, you honour, it wasn't muder, only not unintentiomal discharge of a small ammount of gunpowder with indirect consequences that could not have been foreseen with certainty.

I talked to a man who was a marine serving in Okinawa. I was under the impression that the Japanese liked Americans since we have been their allies for decades. The x marine assured me the Japanese didn't like Americans in the least. A few years ago an American who lived and worked in China said the Chinese people were very loyal and patriotic to the Chinese communist government and thought very negatively of the United States. It's best not to assume anything not knowing the reality of things.

Given the Japanese obsession with quality these may be the finest “Helicopter carriers” ever built. Am curious.

How many do they have? How easy to convert to F-35b jets?

It's huge, for a "destroyer".
And they have been modified to operate F-35Bs

One of them is named KAGA. Next should be Akagi, Hiryu and Soryu!
