Join me as I walk you through the friendly and fun atmosphere of the show, and even get the judge's perspective on what they are looking for. Whether you're growing flowers or food in your garden, I hope my journey inspires you to take that next step with confidence.

Happy gardening! 🌻

Two best pieces of advice I ever got were, never miss a chance to keep your mouth shut and your ears open you never know what you’ll learn. Second, smile no matter what it will make people wonder what you’re up to!

Firstly, congrats on your placing! I can absolutely relate to your feelings, because thanks to you (yes, I am blaming you again, Eli!) I entered the Horticultural section of our Annual District Horticultural and Industrial Society Show last weekend. I always enter the Industrial section (aka Handcrafts - knitting, embroidery etc, Baking and Jams, Wine etc) and frequently come away with placements.
However, I was persuaded by Eli (yes, you!) to buy a GreenStalk and take up gardening this year. I stuck 4 viola seedlings in the GS mixed in with veg and herbs. In the “Border bed” (a fancy name for a patch of dirt previously home to nettles and other weeds) I threw some calendula seeds.
I was awarded Best Exhibit for my 6 viola heads on their display board which I finished constructing at midnight and 1st Place for my calendula.
I was over the moon, especially after speaking to the Judge later who said he had not seen such perfect violas in 15 years of judging. I literally had no clue what I was doing, neither growing nor showing!! 😂
All thanks to you, Eli! I will definitely be doing it again next year, along with my handcrafts.

Thanks so much for covering the show. Great to hear from the judge, especially his comments about my winning onions. First time showing and 2 firsts and a second for the red onion. Great fun. Thanks again and heres to next year's show, hope to see you there.

Thank you for being brave enough to enter! I’ve often wondered what happens at these shows. Think I may visit one now. And congratulations on placing second! 👏👏👏👏

I entered my first show on 31st August. A few flowers from garden and the odd thing from the allotment. Ended up winning the 1 veg 1 flower novice class for my carrot and orange dahlia. 😂
It was good fun to take part.

Congratulations on your 2nd place! What a great experience. Here in the states, we have county fairs where people enter vegetables, canned goods, pies, flowers, crafts, animals and many other things. I enjoy going and seeing what my community has been working on. I've had some lovely sunflowers this year, that's what I would enter.

Enjoyed that Eli. Nice to have an insight into the judging. I have a very old guide book. No horticultural show here this year tho, due to organiser illness, but I LOVED it last year. Lots of fun.
