Actually, he technically didn't run away. He was sucked into a wormhole, traveled to an alternate dimension, came back with amnesia, and THEN started to run an island full of pokemon.

to be fair to the initial post, Mohn has no memory of his life with lusamine or their kids. his mind basically got reset by a wormhole. for all he knows, he's ALWAYS run the poké-pelago. The Mohn that Lusamine married and raised a family with is gone, basically as close to dead as someone can be in pokemon without being, you know, for realsies dead. (he might also just be a version of Mohn from a different dimension, it is a little unclear in the actual games. but in the anime it's weird ultra-dimensional pokemon brainwashing)
