Yeah literally the song is mocking the idea of people saying "oh i wish i was born in the past" by looking it through rose-colored lenses and purposefully ignoring the problems

I cry when I stumble upon media literacy, critical thinking and nuanced interpretation online. It's like finding an oasis in a desert.

That line is also coming from the perspective of a child. Being an overthinker or a creative can be isolating and lonely. She ruined what was supposed to be a fun game with her friends because of her mind. But it's also the place she escapes to find peace. No decade would be better, reality is cruel, but she can dream up a fantasy where only the gentle survive.

Someone posted these lyrics saying 'so she's ok with sexism?' when she literally points out how women could be married off in the Very. Next. Line. People need to be tested for basic literacy before they're allowed on the internet.

People expected that the song pause for a speech about acknowledging the wrongs of the past, a 10 minute silent vigil, and then a pledge to absolve all the wrongs done before the song resumed.

omg literally i heard someone trash talking about this and at the time I hadn't listened to it yet, and now after literally just reading a few more lines you're like "oh she's literally saying how she keeps romanticizing different places but it's really not even that good when you actually think about the time period" and she wrote that so beautifully

This is why I deleted tiktock and twitter. 0 media literacy whatsoever.

I literally couldn't believe people didn't understand the line was about how we romanticize the past ecen though there were problems. She's literally the one who brings it up and kills the mood with her friends game too... they're all playing along and she has the wake up call that daydreaming about a rose-golden idealized part of the past isn't fixing the problems. Its the "if only" of it all.

the whole point was how people romanticise the aesthetics of the past.

Just because a piece of writing or art references a subject like racism or sexism doesn’t mean it’s in support of the problem. It’s clear this is a criticism of romanticizing the harmful past

She's so right for that. When I hear "omg it was much better in the past". No it wasn't, you just think it was because of nostalgia

this and the GTA line in so high school got so much backlash from people who listened to one line and thought they knew it all. like when they were calling the GTA line so childish as if the song isn't literally called so high school and the whole purpose is to describe how he makes her feel like a giddy high school girl with a crush lmao

The thing is, she ISN’T fantasizing about being in the 1830’s to escape her current relationship? She’s recalling a memory of a time where she was a child playing a “what decade would you want to live in?” game with her friends, and talking about how she would “ruin the fun” by calling attention to how brutal those times actually were. As a child, she would feel bad for “ruining the fun, ” but in hindsight as an adult, she can see that the entire thing was never fun to begin with, because everyone was playing that game based on spoon-fed nostalgia and an ignorance of how the world actually worked.

I remember when fantano did a review on her and says “no one wants taylor dead” when talking about Who's Afraid Of Little Old Me? Like girlie that's an hyperbole, I can't believe a music critic did not know what an hyperbole is😂😂😂 also people had such a problem with the “you wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me” cause taylor came from a wealthy family and thinks she was talking about her childhood home and not the entertainment industry in which she was basically raised in cause she's been in the industry since she was 16 and we all know what does the entertainment industry loves to do to young women

She writes it in a child’s voice too. People complain too much lmao

She's probably one of the few artists who got hated for saying she wants to go back in time but without all the racists 😭

I think people are just trying to find a reason to be angry. People critiquing her ability probably didn’t pay attention to English in high school. Nice video, perfectly summed it up.

thanks for the explaining, i cant believe how little dissection and thinking everyone gave it before jumping to conclusions and hate, people are exhausting

Thank you for this video! It's so confusing how people are totally missing the point of this line - and the album as a whole. It's okay not to like her music, but if you're gonna spend energy hating on it, at least do the research and hate on it accurately. 😅
