My dad made me come work for him for free in exchange for living at home.

I am from India, saw some shorts of Shaq, googled and found he is a basketball player. I watched many Hollywood movies, The family concept is very highly rated in movies. But when I see actual practice in US, kicking children out of home after 18 is proudly shared. Even families are largely broken, divorce is so common.
In India, supporting your children even in their thirties or forties is common. If required, good earning members support their parents too, even close friends or domestic help. I am 50+ and earning well in my job. During COVID when lots of people were dying and some during performing essential duties declared by the government, my 80+ mother called me to leave my job and not to risk life. She told me that we have enough to feed ourselves and leave the city, move to farm house (my father is a farmer). These values or bonds are much more important than money you make, success is not about money.
