Counting of votes for the high-stakes Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana is currently underway. Early leads show that the Congress has moved past the BJP in Haryana, while the National Conference-Congress alliance is also ahead in Jammu and Kashmir. While Jammu and Kashmir voted in three phases from September 18 to October 1, Haryana went to the polls in a single phase on October 5. This was the first time that the union territory voted in an Assembly election in the past 10 years and also the first after abrogation of Article 370. In Haryana, these polls are the first major direct contest between the BJP and the Congress following the Lok Sabha polls. A total of 873 candidates are in the running in Jammu and Kashmir, while Haryana will decide the fate of 1,031 candidates
