Insta360 ONE X: 360 Action Cam Overview

Insta360’s new ONE X action cam marks a substantial step forward for action cameras. I haven’t been a big fan of 360 video in the past until I saw how the ONE X could help me with behind-the-scenes and lighting breakdown shoots. I often don’t have anyone around to help me shoot BTS or follow me while I explain how to setup a lighting design. The ONE X allows me to do this by letting me shoot 360 video, and then re-compose the shot in post so it looks like I had a camera operator follow me around!

Thank you for the overview Curtis. I'm looking for a 360 camera to use with my Sennheiser Ambeo VR mic and Sound Devices Mixpre 10 II. This looks like a good choice. My work is to capture sounds from nature and I just need a camera to show the surroundings. Looks like it could be powered from an external battery in the field.

I can imagine the bullet time feature in the future be used to create volumetric models of people, once the resolution is higher at least. This camera is definitely quite interesting and have been considering getting one myself.

Thank you for this informative review. I was interested in using the insta360 to do a choreography using the tiny planet and similar effects, but I need a good quality image and this looks over-compressed: this compression kills the poetry of the image. I can handle noise and grain and other camera limitations, but not the aesthetics of the overcompressed image typical of action cameras. I don't understand if it is a limitation due to the sensor size or rather to the maximum bit rate it can record .... and if other 360 cameras would do significantly better.

Can you get this camera to compensate for the fishiness?? I love The versatility of action cams but I HATE that fish eye lens look.

Also you mentioned a log mode. Are you able to color grade or color match footage from this?

Would this be acceptable for pro work? Or do you consider it firmly consumer?

I was looking everywhere and couldn't find an answer, so hopefully you can help me out Curtis. Can you shoot while charging the camera via the USB cable? So far it suggests the Insta360 One X is limited per battery. Also, does live-streaming to YouTube work okay?

I didn't expect you would do also a review of the Insta One X, because there already are a lot of them done, so i find it very positive you do a review ! (I own a Insta360 One X)
I only expected you would give some tips on the sound in this video, because the One X is really bad at it, i I allready have the Zoom H4n, which i find a bit bulky next to the Insta,
so i'm looking for a pocket (digital) recorder, that is easy in use, at a wide volume level, like from a forrest, to a music concert level, with external mic input (secure 3.5 jack?) with less distortion, i'm not a pro, it should be good enough for youtube quality, what should i look for ?

Nice video as always. I still have mine in the box can of afraid to use it since I’ve never edited anything in 360 before. I heard I have to get a plug-in from go pro or something like that if you want to edit this type of video where the viewer chooses what they want to see. Not sure if it’s true

Perfect timing! Just got mine yesterday. As you alluded to in your evaluations, the internal mic is rather disappointing and there are no options for connecting an external mic according to insta360 themselves. So with that in mind, I'm going to be filming some walk around of theme parks and other attractions and want to pick up the ambient sounds to help add to the feel of the video, if you had $100 to purchase a stand alone portable mic to do it, what would you look at? It would be great if it could double up as an interview style mic too! Appreciate the effortless professionalism as always 😎

I used to use something simalar to do real estate VR tours....It wasn't good enough (and there was no artistry or challenge), and I started shooting video "tours".... which is WAY more work. I'd consider one of these again and go back to the 3D tour for lower-end homes if it were good enough. This one isn't it. I am interested in the Richoh Theta Z1 which has the same form-factor and lists for $1K.... which is the MOST I'd spend for such a specialized device....


P.S. Off topic, but we're very interested in your opinion on Davinci Resolve 16's new loudness tools. Thanks, Curtis!

Awesome and very intricately detailed review Sir as always, really appreciate your hard work. One thing I like to know in which city do you live in if you do not have any problem to share because your house seems at a very nice location. One more question as you are an audio expert that I wanted to make a youtube channel back in 2008 but did not because I thought in few years YouTube will launch the dual audio facility for the videos and then I will start a channel and in 2012 when the Opening Ceremony of London Olympics was uploaded on YouTube in dual audio I get very excited that in few months YouTube will launch this facility for normal creators as well but it never happened, even the Opening Ceremony Video with dual audio is also not available anymore(as long as I know). Then I caught up in some of my ventures so now nearly 10 years later I am finally going to start my channel and like to know from you why YouTube is not giving Dual Audio facility, what could be the reason aside from a little more processing and Data Load, what other factors could be there behind this and is there any hope in near future that YouTube will launch this. If you can please answer this either here or in a video it would be a great help. Pardon me for my poor English as I am not a native English speaker. Love your work and a big fan from a small town Mundha Pande in India.
