I had a movie on my Google Drive that Google deleted because it violate copyright laws. I hate Google.

That's why it pays to put your own layer of encryption onto the data BEFORE you stick it in the Cloud. My own personal mantra is I would rather lose access to it myself even if it ensures nobody else can access it either, just the way I am. Microsoft & Google might be able to easily access your data stored on their systems - but they hit a right snag when they find additional encryption they don't have the keys to!

If its "free" you have no expectations. If you pay for it, then you get what's in the contract. Have you ever read the contracts?
Microsoft does have significant multisite redundancy though. Google had a bombproof site served by 2 seperate power grids and backup generators but site still went black. Amazon has 3 sites in the Seattle area and on occasion had all 3 down (why Netflix is now on Google).

Great video, really appreciate it! I'm a Mac and Android user so Google Drive is the best way to have remote access to my files from both devices. Zero-knowledge was so important for storing passports, IDs, degrees, etc.. and you've just shown me the way to do so, thanks!

The best way is to encrypt your files with offline keys. Any online storage provider can access any of your files. After all, they're stored on their hard drives. They shouldn't be allowed to dig through your files, but they can, and they probably will if you stick out.

There are trillions upon trillions of files stored there, so the chance that a Microsoft employee manually goes through yours is slim, but they simply can.

So encryption it is.

They can look for ANY content in your files, contacts, documents, images, videos, notes, audio - and the user won't know what exactly.
CSAM is only an excuse, and is supposed to trigger friends when they learn you're against the scanning - "you don't like it, so you must support CP!". A smart move.

YES, of course. Please DO discuss other cloud providers and your experience. I want out-of-my-home backup.

I'm glad there's a program like this out there. Encrypting everything before Microsoft or Google get anywhere near it. Now that makes sense.

In the cons, you forgot to mention that synology and QNAP NAS both had crippling vulnerabilities to their remote access software which allowed hackers to encrypt all your data .

Cloud storage providers can also check for copyrighted content on your drive in a similar way that content matching works on YouTube and how cloud storage providers check for other illegal content. If it matches the hash for any copyrighted content, your account is gone and your files are nuked.

I have been using PCloud for the last two years. Bought a life time plan for 2TB and they use 256AES. Not sure if lifetime is really realistic, but in only one more year it will be free compared to using Dropbox.

I use it for my sensitive tech files and pre-patent docs because never trust anyone or anything with your content

I use Cryptomator because it's free, open-source, and have more features but be aware of that Onedrive might think you've got attacked by ransomware but don't worry just click it it isn't an attack.

Yes, please show us other options, especially the service you use.

Well, this video makes me feel old-fashioned. I'm a desktop computer user using physical hard drives, and I have no plans to "update" how I do things.

If you encrypt all files, instead of only your sensitive files, then an adversary will have a much more difficult time determining which stolen files to decrypt.
Use an encrypted attachment for your email messages because the text body is not encrypted.

Box Cryptor: Always save the encryption file on a separate medium in case of emergencies, such as a PC that suddenly refuses to work, is stolen due to burglary, a fire (3-2-1 backup strategy always), or other causes. Always play it safe, security is only safe if you have a backup of everything, including all encryption files, whatever !!
