Before big events
Are you preparing for a job interview, an exam, or a presentation to a group of people? It is stressful! There are many stressful situations that could like “final exams”. If you write about the stress you are feeling about the exam then you improve your chances of score better. The amazing power of expressive writing! Writing just before a big event about the stress of the big event gives you super powers! It’s in the research!

After negative experiences
Another time to write is after negative experiences. We tend to hang on to memories of when:

our significant other said or did something that hurt our feelings.
our boss or teacher unsympathetically dismisses our hard work.
a friend or relative makes us feel dumb or embarrasses us.
These experiences trigger anger. And although anger is not a sin it can get in the way of us being productive. Research shows that writing about negative experiences frees up working memory. Our minds can comprehend and manage more things without the stress! This is one of a couple big benefits to expressive writing

Bookend your day!
Morning bookend
Many writers and writing programs have touted the personal benefits of writing in the morning. An example program is writing continuously for 20 minutes without stop or caring for the quality of the writing. Write about yourself. Write about how you feel. Write for your eyes only. I like to call this kind of writing “Grip-it-and-rip-it writing”. It is something I do each morning in my prayer journal. It works wonders on my day.

Evening bookend
The second part of this bookend approach is writing before you sleep. You guessed it, research shows that you sleep better with gratitude writing at night. So part of your nightly ritual after you brush your teeth(!) grab your pen and journal and essentially count your blessings. 😁 Write “I am grateful for…” you fill in the blank. You’ll sleep much better by filling your mind with gratitude.

Many years ago my ex husband found my very personal journal or letters I wrote to God expressing my feelings and thoughts. He made fun of me. I never wrote again 😔. I don't want anyone else to read my most personal expressions.

writing doesn't have to be slow. once you start writing more, you start writing faster and all your thoughts just spill onto the page and before you know it half an hour has gone by. it's really fun

I journaled when I was 11 because I didn't have anyone to talk to and no one cared about my experiences....now I am 14 and I have loads of journal books

Edit:I'm now 15 turning 16 in 3 monthes and I can tell you guys I am now mentally in a worse state than I used to be. I don't journal anymore though but I express my feeling in drawings. Though, I do wish to start journaling again since it helped me order my thoughts and give them some sort of structure to understand myself better. For me, expressing feelings through art and words is alternative therap, since I dont have enough time to have an actual session with a professional. If you dont know how to start, start by writing about what your plans are, what your goal is to write a journal, what do you want to achieve with it, why do you journal. And most importantly stay consistent with your writing (try to journal atleast once a week or even if needed once a day.)

Journaling is my therapy. Write it out then when the cheapo notebook is full, throw it out and move forward with my life! Every morning with a pot of coffee and is my routine for over 60 years. Great video. More people should write and be at peace with oneself.

My problem is my journaling throughout my life have been recording negative events/feelings; it's an outlet. Someone reading them in their entirety would think, boy, they had a poor attitude. I'm encouraged by this video to use it for gratitude statements (at night) and intention statements (in the morning).

One of the things I have decided to include in my daily entries at the end is a quote of the day. Question of the day and gratitude point.

The stuff that sir said about negative experiences get broken down, is SO true!
All my life, I've been so depressed, but at the end of the day, my journal soothes me down...so if you're feeling low...write down all your emotions on a piece of paper, your journal, etc, and you will feel the difference right then and there!

journal the way you want to, when you want to or when you can. it's the freedom from other peoples' expectations and suggestions that makes journaling a good activity.

My journal (which has several volumes) turns 29 years old this week. Some years I journaled daily, other years only a few times a year. I write from front to back, and from back to front I glue in special items that I want to save, as well as quotes, poems and sayings that impact me.

While a Senior Officer in Military- my Journal SAVED ME many times when having to go back and sort out what happened when so reports would be accurate and supported

Hi, I “journal” in five main areas. 1. Personal studies, (usually on biblical or spiritual matters). 2. Penmanship practice, (usually inspirational quotes). 3. Work or professional logs (a work notebook). 4. Current events/state of the world. 5. Short film and short story ideas. Would you recommend my writings be in separate journals or combined into a single journal? I ask because for the most part, the common thread in all my writing is that they all come in the form of brain dumps. An idea pops into my mind and I want to write it down. The problem is that in order to keep my writings organized, this means carrying five journals everywhere I go. Suggestions? BTW, thank you for this video. It was a great help.
