The Man with the Moustache and His Evil Overlord Kitty (the series). That sounds like a bestseller.

I could never write a mystery novel, at least, not one that could be taken seriously. I think I would be able to write a PARODY of mystery novels. In fact, I'll do it write now.
THE DUDE ON THE TOILET
A wealthy aristocrat was hosting a party, and the next day, all the guests were dead. The only witnesses were the aristocrat's 27 butlers and a guest who was taking a dump when the whole thing happened.
In response, Sherman Holmes, a retired detective with a drinking problem is called in to solve the case of who did it.

The third cliché made me think of the difference between the movie adaptation and the book, Horns. In the movie, the murderer is shown as this great, helpful guy and is used as a twist. In the book though, the murderer is given away early. This may not make for a good twist, but I loved it because I didn't have to think as much about "who dunnit" and instead I could learn more about how/why he dunnit. And the (sort of) twist is ultimately the answer to how/why. I'm probably not explaining it well, but I thought it was a unique way of writing the mystery and it obviously resonated with me well.

"I'm thinking about writing a mystery, thriller novels." "About a retired detective who uses imperical evidence, to solve his last murder."

I agree as a fan of the genre that mystery is something very difficult to get right. Personally, I prefer a satisfying reveal that I was able to guess from the information given over one that is cliche or doesn't make sense (or that the reader couldn't possibly guess).

In terms of titles, I'm quite partial to the play on words, something picked up from my love of police/detective shows like CSI.

I didn't know "the character in the place" was a mystery thriller cliche, but I'm sick of it as it's everywhere and when it's a movie title, it makes me not want to see the movie because ... ugh.

Loving the mustache! And I am writing/ planning a thriller mystery-ish and I knew of these cliches but it's always good to be reminded that they aren't necessarily bad but like you said use it and make it your own.
Thanks!!

Tropes are not cliches. There is nothing new under the sun - if you can imagine a story premise - it has probably been thought of before - writing is an art as much as a technique - so it's the 'how' not the 'what' that makes the difference between mediocre and great.

So many of these cliches are why I've never been drawn to this genre. But it's not fair, because I haven't actually tried it.
