The Leftovers starts three years after a global event called the "Sudden Departure", the inexplicable, simultaneous disappearance of 140 million people, 2% of the world's population, on October 14, 2011. Following that event, mainstream religions declined, and a number of cults emerged, most notably the Guilty Remnant, a group of white-clothed, chain-smoking nihilists, and a cult led by Holy Wayne, a man who views himself as the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

The music is gorgeous, too. I wish this show had gotten the same reception as True Detective S. 1. back in 2014. I thought the latter was the lead-in to The Leftovers. at the time…But when u fully watch via binge, it does a number on u! I’d caught a couple episodes during S. 1 & thought “well, this is depressing’…but extremely compelling.” I binged S.2 in 2021-ish cuz my friend in Texas said she’d been an extra in that season. Man oh man. I went back to S.1 after that, but need to get through the rest of 3. I guess I need a 4-7 year break between seadons😢😅
