Gov. Abbott says cities can't increase property taxes if cities defund the police.

Governor Greg Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, and Speaker Bonnen
announced a proposal that would limit cities' abilities to raise property tax rates if they also went forward with "defunding" police efforts. Last week, the Austin City Council chopped $150 million from the Austin Police Department's budget, roughly 34% of the department's $434 million total budget.

As a native Austinite and current resident for the last 52 years, thank you Governor. This lunatic Mayor and council are ruining our city.

Wish Austin had the same common sense as Fort Worth...

Mayor Price - I appreciate your unprompted comments about the concerns regarding community relationships with the Police Departments.

Defunding is the wrong adjective. The whole idea is that money is redirected to alternative avenues of enforcement and/or maintaining the peace, which will bring about a better, and possibly less violent resolve of certain situations, such as mental health calls. The police have complained for years they're expected to be psychiatrists and social workers. Defunding would hire these people to work WITH the police. It doesn't mean getting rid of the police, it just means putting the money to better use which will result in positive outcomes that benefit everyone.

Yes, Yes, Yes.! It's about time Adler is put in his place...what is he thinking? Defund him and see how it feels.

Thank you Governor Abbott for common sense leadership. Texas is blessed to have a Governor that backs the Blue.
