There are very few large scale elephant rescues. Most of the elephants are rescues from abuse. Many but not all babies are rescued from mothers being killed. The one I watch the most is this lady who started the rescue on a small piece of lsnd and has systematically bought more and more land to create a natural environment. She goes all over the country to rescue abused elephants as well as ones who have health issues. She rehabs them and lets them build friendships and create families so that when they are better they can go off with their family on to her vast property and live normal safe lives. People will also turn their elephants in to her for various reasons. She is very sensitive to their needs.
