I have the exact same car and it's 3k old and not a single problem to date. No software bugs etc. It's a great car and in "power" mode has nice kick if you really need more than what it gives you by default by just being electric. Definitely recommended.

We got the same exact model (ID4 PRO) and color (which is a pretty dark turquoise blue that changes color depending on the light; my wife likes the brown seat accents but I'm not a fan, but the blue exterior only gives you this option). It does have it's cons, but I wouldn't call the acceleration soulless, just very mid, and the turning is really accurate and makes remarkably tight turns when need be. Like a lot of car companies making electric cars, Volkswagen chose to bury way too much into the touch screen (look how minimal and futuristic!!!--said no one ever), but the light haptics are nice at the bottom. With two cars over a decade old, I did over a year of research in buying my family's first electric car as our world faces climate change chaos, and while there is trade-offs with almost any car you purchase this is the best all-electric SUV you can buy in 2023. My wife bought this for her commute in July of 2023, and it has been a wonderful purchase. Ranked #4 in Car in Driver for Electric SUVS, this is actually #1 when you realize that the cars ranked above it are definitely not SUVs, but rather just small luggage, low-riding sedans on an SUV frame: Ioniq 5 (#1); EV6 (#2); Mach-E (#3). The only other car this far up on the list is the Nissan Ariya (#5) that comes with a stellar design and actually looks like an SUV with a high center of gravity, but its definitely more expensive and doesn't come with federal tax credit (the batteries aren't made in the US). As I am in California, we will get $2, 000 tax rebate + the federal tax credit of $7, 500. And when you take this into consideration, the Volkswagen ID4 is a bargain as the tax credits kick in making it slightly cheaper than almost any hybrid SUV on the market. Electric cars are about 1/3 to 1/4 of the energy cost to fossil fuel cars, and have 50% less expense for maintenance. So if you are looking for a sensible (instead sporty and sexy) car, especially for SUVs with ample luggage space for families, this is the best on the market.

I brought the exact same car back in February. I put close to 5000 miles on it since then. Car does drive smoothly. The newest software seems they've removed the major problem some other people experience, do I have had some bugs (e.g. touch screen rebooting for no reason, mulitiple attempts to open the doors, etc ).

I was thinking of getting the EV6, but the base model is even slower than the VW, they wanted more money and very little in the way of free charging. Similar look to the eb-6 but not a sloping roofline which I was not a fan of.

I don't have home charging available, so I rely on the EA network. Some charge experiences are better than others. Hopefully they will get their act together now they are facing existential competition from Tesla charging Network with Ford and GM adopting NACS. I chose this car in large part because of the free 3 year charging that VW gives on the EA network.

Audio system is good, , but I would not characterize as great. Then again my prior car had and infinity Direxion stereo system in it and with this something is missing. Still you get value for your money here.

Nice review. Dealers are offering pretty good deals on remaining 23s. I just leased one with 17k off sticker in discounts and incentives. Other than the horrible infotainment, I really like this thing. Quick, smooth, decent handling, and comfortable seats. Overall lease cost is about what I’d pay for a mid spec CRV or Tiguan but I like this car better. Those cars, to me, feel less comfortable and the interiors are worse. Over the last year, I’ve had a chance to drive almost every EV on the market and I think this one strikes the best balance of price, features, range, comfort and performance. Honestly, I also thought the steering and suspension tuning was better than the others too. Even most BMWs now have this unsettling vague feeling on center -which thankfully the id4 doesn’t. We rarely drive more than 40 miles a day though and have a garage to plug it in at night. If I took regular long road trips and couldn’t charge at home I wouldn’t get an EV. That being said, I did try an EA station at a target a few days ago and it was pretty fast and easy - car was charged to 80% before I was done shopping. The only cars I’d want over this would be something like a Taycan or maybe a q8 etron for the amazing ride quality and comfort. (Plus a 911 or 718 as a 2nd car ;)

VW recommend on the UK website the Ohme Charger and Octopus supply. I got both when I purchased the VW Cupra Born. The VW Cupra Born didn’t charge 5-80% in 35 minutes stated in the technical info but took 50/55 minutes so basically less than 2hrs driving for 50/55m charging. Hopeless in my experience! I’d carefully check the stated rate of charging and make sure that VW won’t later argue it is a “range” for instance. The VW website for the id4 has an involved charging simulator and a long footnote which includes the unexplained and random battery safe “feature”. Given my experience of the VW Cupra both with poor DC speed and with half charging overnight on Ohme/Octopus on 75/80% of AC charges, I’m not convinced with this EV platform

Why make a video of an EV and say “another con is it’s a EV” or telling people it’s not practical… if we are watching the video, I am pretty sure we know what will work for us…

This is the one I got, except a different color. It's in no way an exciting car, but it checks all the boxes and has no real glaring deficiencies. Its main distinguishing characteristic is its value. It's probably the cheapest long range compact electric SUV available right now, if you don't want to break the bank.

8:12 Negative: VW does not have spare parts for repairs. I have been waiting for 2 months, and I have to wait for another month for presumed ETA (door handle & latch). What good is a warranty if VW cannot repair the car because of a lack of spare parts?

Nice review, thanks. You do a disservice to the motoring public by saying a car with 270+ miles of range is mostly suitable for city duty. That’s just not accurate. In more than five years of ownership, we’ve driven our Tesla Model 3 Mid Range all over the United States. Granted, Tesla Superchargers are everywhere, but non-Tesla chargers are really starting to take hold. Plug-in hybrids make sense in some cases, but on long trips you’re still blowing carbon into the already carbon-saturated atmosphere. We need to stop doing that.

It is a Volkswagen. My other cars are a Forester and a Prius. Not exactly performance vehicles.

Better bang for your buck: This ID.4 or the CX-5 Signature Turbo you test drove recently?
