An introduction to the setup and use of the Louet S40 Hatbox spinning wheel — a direct drive, Scotch Tension travel wheel first made between 1979 and 1994, with a limited re-release in 2015. I'll talk you through how the wheel works, the repairs I plan to make and some of the common issues you might find if you buy a vintage S40.

Ooo you make me want a hatbox!!! My first spinning wheel was a Louet S 15 about 30 years ago which I sold. I started spinning again this past winter while I was recovering from back surgery. I bought a used S 10, and several other wheels I now have a second S10 and a SpinolutionPollywog and I’m getting an S 15. I am down the rabbit hole and I’m hooked :-) I enjoy watching your blogs. You do a great job. Thank you.

I’ve just bought one of these and are waiting for it to arrive, so this has been very helpful.

Thanks you so much for this great video, I got mine from my sister who died 35 years ago, I got spear parts from Louët and we are busy refurbish it in to what I want it to be hope to use it soon. My beauty is from February 1970. Have fun using yours!

I'm beyond jealous 😁. That is an amazing find. Personally I'm crazy for anything from the 70's. I dream of finding a gem like this in garage sale or a thrift store. It's part of the romance of older tools.

I know this is not a very versatile wheel and it’s main utility is that it’s tiny and portable but man I want this wheel, it’s just so cool!

I enjoyed this very much. What a cute wheel! It is great to hear that Louet is such a good company. I recently bought a new Louet wheel - my first wheel ever.

I’ve really enjoyed your videos and learned so much even though I’ve been spinning for quite a while. I especially liked your 51 yarns spin along - so much valuable information! I wonder if you would consider creating a list of your most recommended spinning resources? Videos are great to watch but books can be treasured, pages tagged, sticky notes added, and found much more easily when I want to recollect some tip or advice. I have Margaret Stove’s Handspinning with Merino & Superfine, but nothing else as I’m never sure if a book is worth parting with my limited funds, so some expert guidance in creating a library would be gratefully received 🙂

I almost bought one of these last summer, they're super cute, but then a Ladybug came up for sale for a lot less. I have since wondered if I made the right choice, after watching this video I know I did, lol. My ladybug is anything but fiddly and even at over 30 years old she still runs perfect and was a much better choice for a beginner. Really appreciate these types of videos.

I bought one of the original hatboxes in the Netherlands in 1981 and still treasure it. The workhorse is a Louet S60, almost as old, which runs every day a d can do all types of yarn.

Thank you for this. Just this afternoon, I saw the students at the end of the block were having a yard sale, and there was a tiny spinning wheel. It's in very good shape, although it's missing most of the lazy kate (the steel bar and the connector), all the bands need replacing, and the latches are very corroded. Not bad for $20. It's dated June 1982.

I've resisted spinning for a while, despite the strong presence of the Humboldt Handweavers and Spinners Guild. I'm a crocheter, dang it! I saw in the comments you don't recommend this for a beginner; perhaps I could pass it on to an actual spinner.
