Brazil’s favelas: How do you deliver to somewhere with no address? | BBC News

For many of us, ordering online and waiting for a delivery to be dropped on our doorstep is a convenience we have gotten used to.

But, for those in Brazil’s favelas, that convenience is not an option.

Favelas are densely populated, low-income communities that lie on the outskirts of cities like Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

Now, a new tech initiative is aiming to make those communities more connected.

This video is from BBC Click, the BBC’s flagship technology programme.

Thank you for this message. There are many nations that have similar issues. Hopefully, this delivery service can also reach there’s areas too.

I thought when i clicked that I was getting another 1st world perspective but its heartwarming to see this wonderful idea to address these people so they can participate in the world around them.

I’ve been to Rio about ten times in the past three decades, and I keep heading back there for my holidays. Let me tell you, Rio de Janeiro is absolutely stunning, the weather, the beaches, the food, the people! But let’s get real – the city has some serious issues. Social challenges? Oh yeah, they’re right in your face. However, those Cariocas – that’s what they call the folks born in Rio – they’ve got this incredible resilience. Life throws them curveballs, and yet they’re out there, samba-ing through it all. It’s like witnessing a sunrise after a storm – simply beautiful, my friend. 🌅🇧🇷”

I'm brazilian and I have family members who live close to fevelas and when I visit them, I find it sad how our government has no interest in helping people who live in these communities to have a better quality of life.

This is a matter that should be the responsibility of the federal government!! We elected them and it is their obligation to invest in public safety and improving the quality of life of these people.

It's a pity.
There is no problem to talk about brazilian favelas.
The problem is press only talk and inform about Brazil, talking about favelas, and foreigners, many of them, start thinking Brazil has nothing more than a social nightmare.
They never talk about the very rich culinary and historical cities of Minas Gerais, about Bahia, São Paulo and so many other amazing facts of Brazil.

Clever idea of using a freely available tool to generate addresses for these homes. Unfortunately, this doesn't solve the dangers of these areas.

Also here in Philippines. A lot here are homeless. Philippines are poor than the brazil.

The professor's insights are not really relevant in this scenario...the courier service is (and has to) employ locals. Minimum wage and benefits are nice but a distant second and third to actually having a steady income.

They make 5x the Brazilian minimum wage delivering in the favelas? That is a lot of money for Brazilian standards, they are rich compared to who lives in those places

Brasil has the potential to be great. It's just that rich people are not into sharing. So this is why Brasil struggles to be great.

To deliver something in the favelas is no big deal . That also happens in the countryside or small towns scattered all over Brazil. People can pick it up elsewhere or give the adress of any place near the entrance of the community. And that's what they do. That's what I do.
When it comes to charge for public services like water, electricity, or even private ones, like cable tv, however, living in a favela might be pretty convenient. Let's just wait those who do not live in the favela (rich or poor) pay a higher price for it, shall we? Or to avoid being arrested, since the brazilian penal code demands an exact adress in order to obtain a search warrant.
Time and again the government affords brand new apartments which are given to favelas' inhabitants in exchange of nothing. And it's quite usual they're nearly all sold, cause a lot of people would rather gain some money and keep living in the favelas instead.

This is a trick, for deliveries they need addresses, and with addresses the electric company will make the first delivery, a bill. Bill delivery, a number to track your family.
