Please let people know it is not a generic music/dance festival - but part of ceremonial activities to honor Cretans for making Merkur operation fail when Nazis tried to invade Crete.
May 20th is the Battle of Crete day.
Thousands killed that day. Civilians were those who defended the island and the destruction of the Germans' operation was such that for weeks villages/locals were destroyed, burnt or executed.
May 20th: Cretans celebrate how brave and relentless their civilians-ancestors were as the Fallschimjäger were landing to invade their island.
Keep in mind Cretan+Greek troops, all capable men had left the island and were away having been fighting Italian fascists at the Italian controlled-Albania borders since October 28th(italo-greek war).
