They should’ve tried turning the ship off and on again

Imagine spending 10% of your life randomly stuck on a ship in a lake with no idea when you can leave

I love imagining just the sheer amount of patriotism and snark from the German ships when they were the only ones functional enough to leave on their own (Obviously in a friendly sort of way). I also wonder how many of the crew of the yellow fleet kept in touch with one another after they escaped.

We need a blockbuster about the Yellow Fleet, it sounds incredible.

11:12 The Suez provides its own pilots for navigating the canal so the Evergiven's crew is not wholly responsible. It makes the whole impounding situation a bit more interesting.

"Yellow Fleet" is also an old British term for a mythical division of the Royal Navy to which officers not needed for active duty were "attached".

Its like a typical city in a fallout universe where they made a community or city in some old ship, stadium or buildings.

We gotta petition to rename “EVERGIVEN” to “EVERSTUCK”

Incredible that a canal can be so important but they never even thought about making it bigger...until AFTER a ship got stuck

This story is not told entirely though. This video makes it sound like the all the crews got stuck there for 8 years, but in reality, they were regularly going home and switching with other crews:
"In the following weeks and months, the shipping companies endeavored to obtain permission to bring their crews home, while the United Nations carried on continuous negotiations to reopen the canal. After three months a compromise was finally reached. The Egyptians refused to reopen the Suez Canal, but allowed the crews that had been trapped on-board the 14 ships to leave and be replaced by other personnel. The men were pleased to go home but, in time, several of them returned to the canal for another tour of duty."

Fun fact -- blaming the skipper for your missing goods would be silly. Any ship passing through the Suez Canal needs at least one canal pilot onboard. The pilot(s) will come aboard, and knowing the intricacies of the waterways, will basically take control of the ship and steer it through an area for you, then hop off once they're done. SCA had 2 pilots aboard the Evergiven and were responsible for navigating her safely through the canal. Their lovely drawing was made while they were waiting for the pilot boat to get to them so they could go through.

6:13 to 9:14 The whole story was quite interesting, and sounded like it could be an amazing "based on true events" type of movie.

You neglected to mention that the Evergiven's crew also have been impounded with the ship and cannot leave until the legal matter has resolved. News reports say that they are still being taken care of.

That 14 ship micro state is actually really cool I hope the crews from it still have contact with each other
