Pinellas County: Final preparations ahead of Hurricane Milton

Pinellas County officials gave an update at around 2 p.m. Tuesday ahead of Hurricane Milton. Evacuation orders are in place for Zones A, B and C and the barrier islands are set to be closed Tuesday evening. Potable water services will also be restricted ahead of the major storm at around 10 a.m. Wednesday.

When people can’t evacuate because gas stations are empty for miles and essential supplies are wiped out, we’re setting communities up for disaster. We need a system, similar to WIC checks, that limits the purchase of critical items—like water, batteries, and gas—during emergency situations to ensure everyone has a fair chance to prepare and survive. Right now, a single person can clear out shelves the moment a state of emergency is declared, leaving others vulnerable. We must set reasonable limits on these essentials and encourage hotels to lower rates, not exploit people by hiking prices. It’s time to prioritize the well-being of our communities over panic-buying and price gouging.

One thing I do know, I will NEVER go to a shelter again. Once they have you in there you will NOT get back.out until HOURS and HOURS after the storm while THEY determine when you are safe
