4:46 - oh yes American Samuel Langley designed the first heavier than air aircraft that could fly don’tcha know? Taking off from a floating tower in the Potomac River and so that’s why the first US aircraft carrier is named after him. He was a totally respectable Secretary of the Smithsonian who tried hard to “collaborate” with the Wright Brothers, wanting to compare their promising contraptions with his own “working” aircraft, but for some reason these mid-westerners were mighty suspicious of him and never showed him any of their aircraft up close. After Langley died someone else recreated a design of his, claimed it as the first working aircraft (c1901) and despite those weird bicycle salesmen from Ohio being globally known as the inventors of the aeroplane, the upper class of America’s East Coast clung to Langley as the proper American to have invented this important technology, even the Smithsonian said so, until about 1925!
