I spent time touching up the video, and replacing the audio with a synced higher-quality studio recording. I hope you enjoy.

The only song in popular music that brilliantly used the harpsichord/clavier and not even for a minute sounded corny.

I just love how the 1980s music videos were like mini stories. I love the film making. Takes me back to my childhood

No slow intro, just straight into that gorgeous, mesmerizing melody ...

I want to describe a memory i have of this song. I was very young (about 7 or 8). It was a winter morning and i was sitting in the front television room playing with Lego on the floor. In Australia we had an early Saturday morning TV show called "Rage" and this was on the TV at the time. My mother was doing the ironing in the room next to me. This song came on, it was the first time i had heard it.

I remember i put down my Lego and became encapsulated by this song. I distinctively remember the "haziness" of the video, it was then (and still is now) like someone was smoking a cigarette inside the TV.

Every time i hear this song (especially the starting riff) i get brought straight back to that space and time. I see my Mum, i see my Lego on the floor, i see the huge box TV that was in the room, i hear the sounds of winter outside the window, i feel just like i felt when life was simple and i had no worries in the world. Music can be amazing.

A perfect song. Composed and dedicated to the "finer temptress" that only those of us that quit lived to tell of. The instrumental and vocals at the end evoke the decadent feeling of being on the nod after shooting up. You float in a dream somewhere between waking and sleeping as waves of pure pleasure pulse through your body. If feels like someone is massaging your shoulders (that's called "the pinch") There is no hunger, no pain, just an overwhelming apathy. This is "The Nod" as in nodding off. It is the sacred space of every heroin user. I've been clean for 11 years.

I was in a hospital waiting for my diagnosis with a lot of anxiety, This song was quietly playing on the radio. For a minute nothing else mattered but the melody of this song.

Mixed feelings about seeing this on Top of the Pops 1982 on BBC4 tonight. Great pleasure, but also great pain that I am in 2024, not 1982, and I cannot return to 1982.

This song is beautiful. It's dark, it's soulful. It's been in my mind since I saw the movie "snatch". Love it

I don't care what this song is about. It's hypnotic, discordant, beauty has haunted me from the first time I heard it. It can transport you to wherever you want.

RIP Jet Black, just heard the passing of a magnificent drummer with one of the finest bands in British history. Never a frown...

I've sort of been 'discovering' The Stranglers over the past year or so. I'd never heard this before yesterday. It is MIND BLOWING.

One of the most beautiful & mysterious songs ever recorded.

Golden brown, texture like sun
Lays me down, with my mind she runs
Throughout the night, no need to fight
Never a frown with golden brown
Every time, just like the last
On her ship tied to the mast
To distant lands takes both my hands
Never a frown with golden brown
Golden brown, finer temptress
Through the ages she's heading west
From far away, stays for a day
Never a frown with golden brown
Never a frown with golden brown
Never a frown with golden brown (never a frown with golden brown)
Never a frown with golden brown (never a frown with golden brown)
Never a frown (never a frown)
Never a frown (with golden brown)
With golden brown (with golden brown)
With golden brown

Surely the most pop sounding record about Heroin ever made. I never realised what this beautiful sounding, happy, jaunty song of my childhood was about until I unfortunately became a victim of the 'finer temptress'. Clean now, but it took 20 years to be free.

Song was released in 1982, and it will be played till humanity exists. This is TRUE ART.

~this song is the definition of nostalgia for me! Something so familiar with a strong memory that seems like the sweetest dream in the world...but its imperfection makes it so perfect~

I can’t wrap my head around how genius this song is.
