China calls Hong Kong opposition's unofficial primary a 'serious provocation'

China has called an unofficial citywide election held by Hong Kong's pro-democracy camp a "serious provocation" and declared it illegal. More than 600,000 people turned out to vote on July 13 as the pan-democrats tried to narrow their list of candidates ahead of September's Legislative Council elections. Chief executive Carrie Lam said an investigation is underway.
