I gotta say thank you for this video. I purchased a Giant Defy which comes with TPR Spyre and need to replace the brake pads; now I know how. Your videos are fantastic, keep em coming.

Hello from Sweden! Thanks! I've been skeptical about those, since I have hydraulic on my current bike! I was considering a Specialized Diverge, but it comes with exactly those breaks you show! Thanks for the comprehensive approach!

Have had these on my Giant TCX SLR 2 for two years now. I really like them. I regularly dismount and remount my front wheel from the bike and it almost never gets any rotor rub afterward, even with just QR dropouts. Soap or car shampoo used during bike washes does weaken the pads, but a few practice stops and power is regained. Just keep an eye on pad wear. If the pads are too worn down, the return spring begins to snap loudly every time the brake is used.

I have a Fuel ex 7 29er and the cablewrouting is for hydraulic hoses, even though I used my TRp spyke with gear cablers they worked well so far. The semi metallic pads give good braking power.

Agree 100%. These are the best road mechanical disc brakes. Bike brands need to consider some of these small things when putting bike packages together. When I was researching for a new bike, if it had mechanical disc that wasn't TRP SPYRE, I crossed it off the list!

Thanks for this! I have Tektro Spyre on my Roubaix and I appreciate the maintenance tips.
Again, thanks! :)

If you use decent quality wires and a good outer housing of the wires and make a quite good job in routing them without to many sharp bends the braking power compared to a cheap hydraulic one makes not too big of a difference but still noticable.

hei, you should mount the cable in the inside part of the chainstay so it will be more protected.
thanks for your videos

I've been on these brakes for over 5 years. I've upgraded my bike from Tiagra to Ultegra but I kept the Spyres. Are they as good as hydraulics? No. But they are very good for road and easy to maintain.

These are good brakes.
V-brakes on my old bike sometime stopped working at winter. I think the braking surface on aluminum rim got covered with frost and ice when temperature dropped below zero, and then there was no braking at all.. Whatever how strong I pressed.. until the ice wore off and then the braking effect came to alive sudden, blocking the wheels.
But with these, so far I haven't had any problems. It's possible that maybe the weather conditions just haven't been same.. But so far, I haven't had such terrifying experience with these as I had with v-brakes on my previous bicycles.

Always a pleasure to watch. Just bought the TRP Spyke a few hours ago. Just saw your clip. I'm looking forward to seeing if what you said is true. I'm hoping it's true

2:05 - for water proofness I'd suggest shopping for bikes with the brake housing end pointing down, not up as on the reviewed bike. No one cares, but I made a final decision in a bike shop between two "finalists" bikes in favor to the one that accumulates less water (salt and stuff) around the brake cables.

I had one pair of Shimano cable disk, so what I can tell, they work, not so great, but work.
I think if you need to choose about a V brake or a cable disk, choose the good old one.

I have a brand of cable disc brakes called Bengal on my tourer. They're super powerful and apparently even better than the Tektro ones at the same price point (They're the Bengal 606 - great price). Note that mountain bike cable disc brakes are different from road bike cable disc brakes, as the cable travel distance differs if you use drop bar STI shifters.

What's the difference between the TRP Spyre and TRP Spyre-C? Thanks

Nice video, I am using Avid BB7s on my mtb, so much easier to adjust out on the trail, and I don't have to worry about kinking or pulling hoses out on the trail when I crash :-)

I'd love to see a comparison between regular brake housing and compressionless housing on disk brakes. that should take care of the spongy feeling on the rest brake

Curious if you can compare mechanical disc vs hydraulic disc but also include some mechanically-actuated hydraulic disc breaks (specifically TRPY Hy/Rd), since you don't have to use the large hydraulic brake hoods.
