Extracts from a leaked a voicemail between President Joe Biden and his son Hunter, who was battling drug addictions at the time.

The message, which had been obtained by The Daily Mail and was reportedly recorded on October 15, 2018, captured an emotional Mr Biden saying: “I love you more than the world, pal. You gotta get some help.”

The voicemail has now taken on new relevance because just three days earlier, Hunter bought a .38 calibre pistol from a Delaware gun store, writing on the Firearm Transaction Record that he did not use unlawful drugs. As well as the voicemail, Hunter wrote in his memoir released last year that he had a “full-blown addiction” at the time.

Lying on the federal form is a felony punishable by a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

This week the Washington Post reported that federal agents investigating the president’s son have gathered enough evidence to charge him with tax crimes as well as a false statement related to a gun purchase.
