In Homemade CNC Router Part 8: Installing UGS On A Raspberry PI (Arduino CNC Router) I decided to install UGS On a Raspberry PI. The reason I did this was so I didn't have to bring out my laptop to use my Homemade CNC Router. If you guys have any questions about the installation of Universal Gcode Sender (or UGS for short) on the Raspberry PI feel free to leave your question in the comment section.

Install Raspberry PI On Your Computer

1:
Insert a SD Card into your Computer and download Raspberry PI (32 Bit)
After it is finished downloading insert that SD Card into the Raspberry PI
Turn on your Raspberry PI and connect it to an external monitor
Congrats! You should now have a Raspberry PI Working

Downloading UGS

2:
Download UGS Raspberry PI Version and place it on your desktop
Create a folder and insert the setup file in it then proceed to extract it, this may take a while.

3:
Open up Terminal and Configure the Raspberry PI Correctly

Type “sudo apt-get update”
Then “sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Then “sudo raspi-config”
Select Advanced Options
Select GL Driver
If your using an external screen select “Full KMS”
Then Restart your Raspberry PI

4:
Installing Java Through The Terminal
a: Type “sudo apt-get install openjdk-8-jdk”
b: Let Java Download, this may take some time

5:
Opening Up UGS

Click on the folder you created - ugs platform - bin then proceed to right click on ugs platform - select properties - permissions - Change all the permissions to anyone!
Go back to the ugs icon and right click it then select open - Execute in Terminal!
After you Execute In Terminal the UGS will start to open and load. My first time doing this it took a few minutes so be patient. I noticed it got faster after.

Thanks for doing this video in a nice controlled and slow manner. I followed it step by step. I've been using UGS on my laptop for a few years but wanted to try a Raspberry Pi. I am not linux literate at all, but your procedure got me to get UGS installed on the Pi. Now I have to try it out!!

thanks for this clear and easy to follow step by step tutorial. My Raspberry Pi2 is now a g-code sender in combination with an Arduino-uno and grbl cnc-shield.

I have the same problem with not getting the visualizer functioning using gcode sender, at least now I know from your video that the program will still work without the visualizer, but I am having a problem uploading the gCode since there is no prompt on the missing visualizer screen... do you have a work around for that?

Trying this with a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4gb and not having much luck. I've downloaded the compressed file. However when I go to raspi-config the options you selected are missing. Do I need to use an older version of Raspi OS? I try right clicking on the "ugsplatform" and open with terminal. Nothing happens (and I've waited a very long time) other than the hourglass icon beside the cursor for 10 seconds. Would really love to get my CNC running. Any thoughts?

hello, for some reason i cannot get the java installer to work. i have a rp 5 and I have read that java is already installed. So i moved on to the next step but, ugsplatform refuses to open at all. The terminal window opens and immediately closes. Please could anyone help me. I am also very new to the raspberry scene

I opened that, and it doesn't open. it remains closed, does it need more ram? I have a Rpi 1 B+

You failed to explain which serial device you used on the raspberry pi. Fo anyone else with this same question, for me (I have only a single USB connection on my pi) the device was /dev/USB0

Hi there Im wondering about the GRBL set up so you can make the RPI CNC hat become recognized by UGS?

Unless you are a billionaire, you should consider selling your Pi - they are retailing for 1 trillion dollars on ebay right now - apparently next stock of new PIs is predicted for 2030.
