Let me clarify:

Given Triangle ABC with a line 'l' parallel to side BC intersecting AC at E and intersecting AB at D. The construction involves joining BE, CD, drawing a perpendicular EL on AD, and drawing a perpendicular DM on AC.

Now, consider Triangle BED:

EL is perpendicular to AD (as given in the construction).
BD is the base of Triangle BED.
In the formula for the area of a triangle

1/2 ×base ×height, EL is the height because it is the perpendicular distance from the base (BD) to the opposite vertex (E). The base is BD, and EL is the height corresponding to this base in Triangle BED.

So, in the context of Triangle BED, EL is the height with respect to the base BD.
