From elephant trunks to elephant feet! Episode two of our educational elephant behavioural series sees us taking a look at the elephant behaviour called “foot-swinging” as referenced by Elephant Behaviours.

The behaviour of Foot-Swinging can be seen in five different contexts, as follows: Conflict & Confrontation; Movement, Space & Leadership; Vigilance; Ambivalent, and finally Attentive which is the context in which we are showcasing the behaviour in this video.

We would like to take this opportunity once again, to thank Elephant Voices for sharing all their research on their public platform called the Elephant Ethogram, which provides the world with all this incredible insight into elephant behaviours.

Use this link to view the Elephant Ethogram by Elephant Voices:

* Our elephant behaviour videos showcase various elephant behaviours through our video archives that feature a unique semi-habituated herd, called the Jabulani Herd. By making use of the information available on the Elephant Ethogram, a public platform created and shared freely by the team at Elephant Voices, we are showcasing some of the more commonly seen physical behaviours by sharing a few examples of individual behaviours in succession. All behaviours are always open to interpretation and based on numerous contributing factors which are taken into consideration. *

I'm overhelmed by the infinitely rich and subtle elephant language, and the human insight in it! and also by the fact that elephants 'contemplate', what is the highest spiritual activity!🧡🐘

It's always interesting to watch when they foot swing to see what caught their attention! Love watching their movements!

It almost looks like they are 'waving hello" to Adina with the foot-wave when she calls them, or saying "wait wait lemmee check this real quick" before letting the calf proceed at the water.

Ive been so looking forward to this second episode on Elephant Behaviours, and it doesn't disappoint. What an inspired idea to produce a series like this for those of us who not only love Elephants but want to learn more about them. I'd always assumed this action displayed hesitancy on the part of the Elephant. Well now I shall be watching all future videos more vigilently! The slow-motion follow ups are a great idea. Kudos to Zindoga who has kindly provided most of the examples for this particular episode!! 😊👍 Looking forward to Episode 3! Thank you so much! 💚🐘💚🙏

Nature gave them such a big brain, there must be a reason for it, because a big brain means lots of energy that is needed. Therefore their communication is probably rather more sophisticated than we think, involving all possibilities with trunks, tusks, ears, feet, tails, sounds and demeanour in general. I'm very excited to learning as much as possible. Thank you so much. ❤

Thank you so much for this series! I was watching yesterday's video with Khanysa gently getting to know Phabeni in a lovely interaction at the barn, and she kept doing that trunk to mouth behavior I learned last time. I'm just loving the insight I'm gaining from this elephant 'school' 🥰. Thank you!! ❤️

I love this new series you are doing. I have seen this behavior often, watching the elephants 🐘 of HERD. Now I understand why their foot swings. Thank you for explaining this act. ❤️🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘❤️
