Building a High Performance home on a budget

Today, I’m starting a series where we will document the construction of a house from slab to finish showing the all the critical methods and process for building a high performance home on a budget. First off, let’s define high performance and budget. A high performance home is one that is durable, comfortable and healthy, and energy efficient. All of these can be taken to an extreme. For example, we can build a passive house, green homes that use environmentally friendly products, zet zero homes that don’t need any energy from the grid. We can do all that and we will for custom home clients. I hope more home owners and builders get on board with super high performance in the future. But it’s not realistic to expect any significant percentage of homes to built like that right now. It will take some time to get more people on board and educated. In the meantime, I believe we can get more owners and builders on board with the basics of high performance, which, by the way, make a huge difference in durability, comfort, and efficiency. And that’s the high performance I’ll be documenting in this series. The methods and process I’m going to show in this series are so simple, they can be implemented immediately. Now, let’s define budget. I am not talking about low cost homes that are less than average. I believe there’s a need for that and that can certainly be tackled. But that’s not what this series will be about. What I mean by building a high performance home on a budget is building one that can be sold at the same price as it would if it were not high performance. And profit would be nearly the same. Stay tuned for the next video where I’m going to provide the summary of things first. Then if you follow the series, you’ll see each thing in that summary implemented.
