Winter in a Tiny House: How I Survive & Tricks to Stay Warm

After spending two winters in my Tiny House, I've learned a thing or two about winterizing. In this video, I detail the ways I prepare my Tiny House and appliances for winter.

Keep in mind, every Tiny House (and appliance) is different. Use this video as a guide, but also double check with your chosen appliance manufacturers. Some appliances are not meant for winter use. In this video I am hooked up to the grid. Off-grid winterizing is a slightly different process. For example, electricity would need to be generated from solar or a gas generator. You also may need to dig a french drain for your grey water, below the frost line, in early autumn (if no sewer is available).

Thanks for the helpful tips on winterizing your tiny house! These tips could also benefit someone who lives in a RV fulltime.

You can also add a flip roof over the propane tanks, to help keep moisture off the controls and valves.

I've "binge watched" your vlog since I discovered it just this past weekend. Excellent!! Thank you. I'll admit I haven't "liked" each one as I should have but promise to do so. I just viewed your winterization video and couldn't help but think it may be a good idea to incorporate your Camco heated hosed around your water supply riser. I noticed the snow was melted around the coil of hose lying on the ground so there is heat being dissipated. This same heat could warm the water spigot if wrapped around it from the attachment to the ground. Just a thought. Thanks for you excellent info. I'm living vicariously through them. At near 70 years old, I envy your energy and desire to not be working for your house as I believe you stated in on of your posted.

I would LOVE to see you make a video about how you compost. How you go about composting and how big your composting area is? I don't know much about it and would love to see/hear about your tips and tricks on it all!

You should wrap the heated hose around the spigot, so it helps keep it from freezing.

I used Roxul sheet 1" insulation board instead of foam cause bugs eat the foam and Roxul is flame and moisture resident!

Thank you for this! You don't know how long I've been searching for information about preparing for cold weather. I live in Canada and it can get pretty cold here, so I've been wondering for a long time about water intake, but no one seems to talk about it, ever. /:

you could build an insulated wooden box for both the propane tanks, and you could role the extra, spare, heated hose around the insulated spiket instead of on the ground, and you could use the snow to build "skirts" between the well´s

Just pack some snow in between the wheels :)

Great job! Was it a good idea to leave the propan tanks outside, with no access restrictions? Would it be better to put it into a locked service box?
