Many Black Americans are hesitant to get the COVID-19 vaccine

Blacks appear to be more hesitant to get, and distrustful of, the COVID-19 vaccine, according to a survey by the RAND Corporation. Researchers surveyed 207 Black Americans from across the country. More than one-third stated they would not get the vaccine, and another one-quarter said they didn't know if they would. Only 4 in 10 Blacks said they intended to get the vaccine. Perhaps more surprisingly, almost half of Blacks who worked in healthcare stated they would not get the vaccine. Respondents noted their mistrust in the vaccine, concerns about potential side effects, and a lack of confidence in vaccine effectiveness. These numbers suggest public health campaigns involving Black celebrities and community leaders could help encourage more Blacks to get vaccinated.
