30+ year veteran musician. 12 years in the same church. Yes you're right. You do have to speak up for yourself.

I’ve been in this situation before. My response to the pastor when directly asked to pay 10% of my check back to the church is that I’m already giving them a 10-20% church discount so we can either delete that discount and I’ll pay it back in the form of tithes or we can just keep the pay as is and consider my discount to the church as the tithe. He was happy to keep the pay the same and not ask me again about it.

If you are a member of that church then you are suppose to tithe. If you are just working at the church then that is wrong to expect you to.

The Word says to bring in all tithes into the storehouse that there may be meat in mine house. This particular passage doesn’t exclude anyone regardless if they are a lay person, musician, pastor, bishop, pope. Jesus came not to abolish the law but to fulfill it. What ever you do, one should play, preach, and serve as unto the Lord and not man. God will be the judge of the intent of one’s heart and reward them accordingly. I preach, I play, I pray, I serve, I minister, I pay my tithes and give offerings, all as unto the Lord and not man.

Pay me a living salary and you’re more than welcome to ask for a tithe.

I feel like they should not take out the tithe for you as that really defeats the whole purpose of ones tithe no?
Regarding whether or not they choose to tithe off it should be up to the musician.
But the Bible clearly states bring all tithes to the store house not if you bring these two you don’t have to bring this one. That’s my take 🤷‍♂️

Sounds pretty arrogant to me. The Word speaks about and warns people like this about these attitudes.
