Creating a Python Discord bot in 2025

Those who have been around long enough will know that this channel used to be all about Discord bots, so this feels like a strange blast from the past. This is very much a modern day tutorial though, walking you through the best way to create a Discord bot for the coming year. There's even a bit in there about how to host it as well!

P.S. I know I slightly messed up by invoking the Test Bot instead of Carbohydrate a few times, but the code is the same, and that one is actually being hosted on a Hostinger VPS! So ya know, swings and roundabouts.

i keep running into an issue with the tokens, specifically the (os.environ["TOKEN"] part. it comes back with this

File "<frozen os>", line 714, in __getitem__
KeyError: 'TOKEN'

i apoligise if this is an easy fix, still trying to understand all this new stuff. any help would be greatly appriciated

what version of python is this written in? I think I'm writing in the wrong version and when I tried importing crescent it wouldn't import properly, I moved to python version 3.11.6 and I am still having problems.
