SERIAL COMPRESSION ON VOCALS 🎤

Get a consistent vocal sound when mixing ⬇️

When you're mixing vocals, spiky transients can be a pain in the backside

This is how to get it smooth so it sits in the mix perfectly 👌🏻

For this you'll need 2 compressors ✌🏻

The first compressor is going to grab the spikes

This will ensure it keeps it at a consistent level

Then go to your second compressor (I'm using the Teletronix LA-2)

This will add flavour to the vocal and get it nice and gluey & tight 👍🏻

Yes. My vocal mixes improved so much when I learned this trick. I also go through the lead vocals with a pre-fader automation and pull down any huge peaks before they even hit the compressor.

Best combo is just to level the vocals first (manually or using a plugin like Vocal Rider). Then use a 1176 to catch the extra peaks that were left behind. Final polish is the LA-2A. The less the compressors have to work, the better. :)

SSLComp into 2A is the smoothest/cleanest compression I've gotten yet, wow.

Im for the first time seriously working with a singer on our first song. Three of your shorts in a row (mid range, drum verb, vocal chain) are having a great impact on our outcome! I am really grateful for your tips! Thanks alot!

Finally time for me to dive & dig into the whole sidechain thing. Such a fascinating way to make your mixes sound smoother.

Before and after are at really different levels. Wouldn't it be a fairer comparison to level match and not have the thumbs down?

You should also check the levels before you even compress. Either by editing the vocal tracks by hand or by using something like vocal rider

This is a great tip. I like to put a expander before the LA-2A, depending on the style. And people, don't get fooled by vocal rider. It's just a compressor like any other, but the developers put a fader on the GUI instead of a needle. The automation feature is cool and useful, but it's sometimes too surgical and non-musical. Get your source material right, first of all.

anyway to do it without a $299 plugin? i'm cheap

Thank you for all these compression videos

I usually automate the volume differences in my vocals first. Then I put the SSL comp doing 3db. And finally the CLA-76 doing around 20db 😂 Going freaking hard to get that in your face vocals we all love.

And you want to know why the 1176 into LA-2A works great. Here ya go.
