If you ask me the ending with Venom Snake walking away in the smoke with a myriad of different meanings to me is what I think a badass way to end off the series

He realizes that the man in the mirror, the one covered in blood, the one he calls a monster since the beginning of the game is none other than John, when he punches the mirror, and why he doesn't actually recognize that part as his true self, as john said we built this legend together, big boss is the two of us together, (john recognizes big boss as a separate individual) he will also have the appearance of big boss (therefore john) but not his soul, the part covered in blood is that of the man who sold the world (John, his memories, his life), and Venom recognized it, and chased it away by breaking the mirror, recognizing who he is, a simple doctor from the mother base. ..but now he's become a big boss.

i like to think that while he embraces being big boss's phantom....a part of him is REALLY PISSED with him for doing him dirty like this....i mean, imagine someone strips you from your own life and face....to transform you in a "fake" version of another person, and then said person revealed to you the Truth expecting you to just accept it and deal with it....i would be hell of mad too.

Venom punches the Big Boss' part which is in himself. But he can run, he can hide, but he can't escape to Big Boss' dark side as part of him now.

I interpret the ending like this: Venom Snake punches the mirror and the two places you see symbolize the land of the living and hell. Demon Snake is the incarnation of the sins of Big Boss living within Venom. This hallucination has haunted him the whole game, though Venom snake has finally accepted his suffering and no longer needs a mirror to be reminded of who he is. The mirror breaking symbolizes the omen that will befall him. The partly blood covered Venom Snake is actually him preparing to face his end. The final part of the ending takes place both prior to and after the Ahab's battle with Solid Snake at the end of the original Metal Gear. As soon as he raises his head, he is clean of the blood. I believe that the shadow realm part of the ending is symbolizing what Venom sees after his fight with Solid Snake: His own hell waiting for him. His hell is that void of darkness because he knows that just like Skull Face, everyone will forget him as time marches on. Anything he will try to do won't be heard or recorded in history, because nobody is there in that empty void. To make matters worse, he will forever be a part of the legend of Big Boss, meaning everything he has done will be seen as the actions of a different man. Big Boss takes the glory, but the medic has nothing to be remembered by. The people that do remember the duality of Big Boss are all dead, and Ocelot too. Venom Snake was doomed to lose from the moment he earned the title of "Big Boss." With a first class ticket to hell in his hands, Venom Snake walks into the darkness, never to be remembered...

TLDR: The void is Venom Snake's hell that he's sent to after fighting Solid Snake. The mirror punch simply serves to transition to that.
