SPECTRA
Splitting of light into various colors or color band is called spectra. An instrument used to separate radiation of different wavelength is called spectroscope .The branch of science dealing with the study of spectra is called spectroscopy
The spectra are broadly classified into
• EMISSION SPECTRA
• ABSORPTION SPECTRA
ABSORPTION SPECTRA
White light from a source is passed through the solution or a vapours of a chemical substance and analysed by a spectroscope, its observed that dark lines are obtained in the spectrum. These dark lines are supposed to result from the fact that when white light is passed through chemical substance the radiation of certain wavelength are absorbed depending upon the nature of the element. The wavelength of radiation absorbed by the matter contributes to the missing wavelength which leaves dark spaces in the bright continuous spectrum.
EMISSION SPECTRA
When radiation emitted from some source eg: from the sun or by passing electric discharge through a gas at low pressure or by heating some substance to high temperature is passed directly through the prism and then received on the photographic plate the spectrum obtained is called emission spectrum.
Depending on the source of radiation, the emission spectra are mainly of two types.
 Continuous spectrum
When white light from any source is analyzed by passing through a prism it’s observed that it splits into seven colours. These colours are continuous and then merges into the next. Hence the spectrum is called continuous spectrum
The light of red colour which has longest wavelength is deviated the least while the violet light, which has shortest wavelength is deviated the most.
 Line spectra
When some volatile salt is placed in the Bunsen flame or an electric discharge is passed through a gas at low pressure, light is emitted. The colour of light depends upon on the nature of substance.
Sodium gives out yellow light and potassium gives violet light

If this light is resolved in a spectroscope some isolated colour lines are obtained on the photographic plates separated from each other by dark spaces. This spectrum is called line emission spectrum
Each line in the spectrum corresponds to a particular wavelength. Sodium always give two yellow lines
